  • Question by blackhills2000: Regarding laser eye surgery.?
If someone has laser eye surgery, is it possible that during the laser vision correction, it may also zap out some “eye floaters”?

    Best answer:
Answer by RickNo. The laser is a type of excimer laser, which is a type of cold, non-penetrating laser. In other words, the laser will react with the first tissue it comes in contact with regardless if it is optically “clear”. The cornea is the clear tissue on the surface of the eye. Floaters occur in the vitreous about 1/2 inch into the eye. There is no possible way this laser can effect the floaters this far back.

There are a few doctors experimenting with using a more traditional YAG laser to zap floaters, however it is not usually effective and considered experimental. In my own opinion, the YAG laser may be up for the job, but would be equivalent to zipping asteroids out of space with a joystick. It would have to automated and computer guided to be effective. Problem is, insurance companies do not consider floaters to be visually significant, and no insurance company would pay for the treatment necessary to support development of such technically sophisticated equipment.
